The dynamics of Receivables Management are constantly changing due to the multiple innovations that are impacting finance. Electronic invoicing and payments, invoice portals and networks (such as SAP’s market leading Ariba) , dynamic discounting and sliding payment scales, and mobile technologies are all impacting the way the invoice cycle is managed. Periodically SAP sponsors research studies with industry leading analyst companies in order to objectively ascertain the current pulse of the marketplace. Recently, such a study - Revenue Cycle Management: Increasing Control Over the Order-to-Cash Process - was commissioned with Paystream Advisors, a very highly regarded analyst firm which appropriately dubs themselves “The Finance Process Gurus”. So let’s review some of their findings next, and of course, I will provide a link to the entire report at the end of this article for those that want even more! Continue reading →

The SAP Ariba cloud-based solution for Collaborative Finance - the new name for the Ariba network that SAP acquired in 2012 as an obvious fit for its expanding portfolio of cloud based solutions - addresses these issues by automating not just the processing of an invoice but also the related business documents: purchase orders, order confirmations, advance ship notices, - and even contracts. This helps enforce compliance of the invoice to the PO, preferred suppliers and negotiated prices while delivering complete automation across the procure-to-pay process, which is achieved by extending an SAP or other ERP system to connect buyers with their suppliers. It’s this inter-enteprise collaboration that is at the heart of the SAP Ariba networked solution. Continue reading →

What proportion of a typical meeting in your organisation is dedicated to reviewing what’s already happened, and how much to figuring out what needs to be done next? In most businesses, the ratio is about 80:20 - (that same magic ratio that I wrote about in my last post). That means a lot of sitting round a table discussing old news and rehashing past performance: time and resource which could have been spent on driving the business forward.

This scenario could become at thing of the past with Big Data – a term I’m loathe to employ as it’s been hijacked, misrepresented and over-hyped to the extent that its significance has become as obscure and nebulous as “Cloud” before it.So let me clarify: running a “real time” business, by putting the ‘b’ word and the ‘d’ word to work, isn’t simply crunching millions of historical records in seconds or minutes, instead of hours or days – although admittedly, speed can be a major competitive advantage. Continue reading →

While the technologies that underpin ‘Big Data’, such as in-memory’ computing, are already proving their worth in Enterprise Performance Management, (EPM), by calculating larger budgets and financial closes almost instantly and providing access into vast amounts of multi-dimensional cost and profitability data in nano-seconds, I’m not sure that Big Data itself needs to infiltrate into every area of EPM. Sure we now have the technology that can make it possible and there is perhaps a natural tendency to make budgeting models and cost models ever larger – just because we can – but will it deliver any additional value? Continue reading →

the company still invests heavily in major European events such as SAP Insider Financials 2013 which takes place in Amsterdam from 11-13 June. Given that the company has grown to such as size that Las Vegas and Orlando are about the only locations that can host North American events now – and even then SAP has to really sweat the facilities to showcase its burgeoning portfolio of solutions and technologies – it’s a delight for delegates and staff alike to return to such a beautiful city.

This year’s program has over 200 sessions based around 12 tracks that cover everything from planning and budgeting through to receivables with the newer technologies such as in-memory, mobile and cloud woven into the schedule as appropriate. Continue reading →
